Mt Hutt Aviation Completes New Zealand’s First MD 530N Upgrade
Mt Hutt Aviation has completed New Zealand’s first MD 530N upgrade, with the aircraft now entering service with South Island helicopter operator Heliventures NZ.
Completed by our specialist engineering team in Mid Canterbury, the project involved much more than an engine upgrade. The Heliventures MD 520N was comprehensively stripped, inspected, rebuilt and refinished, resulting in an aircraft that combines a proven MD 500-series airframe with modern systems and significantly enhanced performance.
A Complete Reconditioning
Rather than approaching the project as an engine change alone, our team undertook a full reconditioning of the aircraft.
Components were removed and individually inspected, with parts overhauled, replaced or reinstalled as required. The aircraft was then rebuilt and refinished, incorporating the MD 530N upgrade package, a Rolls-Royce 250-C30 engine, a Garmin glass cockpit and a complete exterior refinish.
For Mt Hutt Aviation CEO Mark Kershaw, the goal was to deliver an aircraft that offered the benefits of a new machine while retaining the trusted airframe already familiar to the operator.
The result is an extensively remanufactured aircraft with modern systems, increased capability and a new lease on operational life.
More Capability for New Zealand Operations
The MD 530N upgrade replaces the MD 520N’s Rolls-Royce 250-C20R engine with the more powerful 250-C30 engine.
The additional performance is particularly valuable for New Zealand operators working in demanding conditions, where payload, altitude and temperature can all influence aircraft capability.
The upgrade also retains the MD 520N’s NOTAR anti-torque system while extending the engine compressor inspection interval from 300 hours to 2,000 hours, helping reduce scheduled downtime and ongoing maintenance requirements.
The 250-C30 engine for the project was prepared and supplied by Asia Pacific Aerospace, a Rolls-Royce Authorised Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Centre.
Supporting a Hard-Working South Island Operator
The upgraded aircraft has now returned to Heliventures NZ, which operates across Otago, South Canterbury and the Mackenzie Country.
Their aircraft are used across a wide range of demanding commercial operations, including agricultural work, powerline and utility operations, firefighting, precision lifting, surveying, hunting, scenic flights and charter work.
For an operator working across such varied conditions, the MD 530N upgrade provides greater performance and payload capability while allowing Heliventures to continue operating an aircraft platform they already know and trust.
